Learning fabric collage should be enjoyable. And I can’t think of a subject that’s more fun to learn the fabric collage process than fish. They come in such a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, you just can’t go wrong! In fact, there are as many ways to interpret a fish in fabric as there are fish in the sea.
It’s a subject that can be appreciated by both beginners—looking for a low-stress project to learn the technique—or experienced collage enthusiasts—as a way to freshen up or loosen up their approach. Either way or someplace in-between, the idea is to have fun playing with our fabric.
Follow along as I create my own version of my “trophy fish” (above)—a project that “shows off” my fabric stash 😉 . In four steps—from first draft through quilting and finishing—I demonstrate the progression and share my thoughts on how I work through this fishy subject.
To get started, I have a variety of fish patterns available through my website (you receive a coupon code for a free pattern with e-workshop purchase), though I encourage you to try drawing your own species of fish. Then I show examples of what you are looking for in your own stash of fabric, how to cut out those fabrics (I’ve got some good tips), and how to begin the collage (sometimes harder than you think). Eventually, step-by-step (with homework given), I cover the collage process through quilting and finishing your own unique fish.
The eWorkshop format allows you to work at any pace you want or need to—either faster because you’ve caught the bug and don’t want to stop—or slower because the rest of life has stepped in.
