The adage says that little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. In this quilt of my niece, “Monarch Maia,” she is made of butterfly wings and glittery things. Featured in this week’s Throwback Thursday, “Maia” is currently at my Specimens Exhibit—along with 11 other collage quilts—at the National Quilt Museum. Hope you can make it to Paducah, Kentucky, while they are all on display (until November 19, 2024).
This TBT post is all about “Monarch Maia,” and being in the NQM exhibit is her second trip to Paducah. The first visit was as a juried quilt in the AQS Show in April, 2022 (above). This “double-portrait” combines my niece’s face along with the wings of a specific monarch butterfly that I raised, photographed, and released.
While you may or may not feel ready to tackle a fabric collage portrait of a family member, an insect is well within most anyone’s reach. You can join the nearly 100 students currently following along with me this summer, as they learn how to create a fabric collage bug or butterfly. Even though tonight (Thursday, August 8, 2024) marks the third presentation of four weeks in this series, you can easily catch up through the recordings we provide for each session. Registration information is below, Tom will send previous recordings when you sign up.
In the meantime, enjoy the following TBT post, taking you from beginning to end of the creation of “Monarch Maia.”
