My “Quilter’s Fantastical Trophy Fish” Zoom class has progressed swimmingly. 😉 Even though we now have held two of the four classes, people keep registering—we’re up to 64 participants—it’s still not too late to join and view live with Q&A. We have recorded the first two Thursday sessions so if you register now you can catch up quick before tonight’s third session, or watch it later at your leisure, the recordings are yours to keep and refer to as desired. You even receive a free fish pattern to give you a head start. Click here for more info. Registration for this Thursday Night Follow-Along: Quilter’s Trophy Fish will end with the fourth and final presentation on Thursday, February 22, 2024.

Above photos: my in-progress demo fish—beginning and end of first week. Background, adding details (including with sheer fabrics) and finishing, will be demonstrated in the other three weeks.

Interested but not sure? Maybe this will help. Below is a time-lapse video of me finishing the first draft of my sample fish (three hours condensed to three minutes—don’t blink!). I needed to finish this step prior to this evening’s presentation, where I’ll be demonstrating the next few steps of the second draft. By the way, if you sign up for this February fish work-along, check your email for a special “10 minute extended edition” video—a little extra to inspire you on your own fishy first draft.

The object is to simply play with our fabrics in a loose and creative way. In the end, we’ll have created a whole school of fantastical collaged “trophy fish” to show off those great fabrics we’ve collected in our stash.

Fish come in a variety of interesting shapes and wild colors, with fins and spots and stripes and all sorts of embellishments. I’ve found out that as long as you include a head, a body, a couple of fins and a tail, there’s no doubt it’s a fish. It’s the type of subject where you can let your imagination run as wild as the colors, and it’ll still look like a fish.

This mini-course will feature four weekly live demos on Zoom—recorded to view or review anytime—plus homework for you (and your fish) over the following week. See the links below for more information or to register.

  • I’ve purchased Serenity Quits and I am trying to source/accumulate a stash of fabrics with patterns etc that will work using your incredible process. What do you recommend as an appropriate size of fabric to purchase?
    Thanks

    • Hi Jan! I’ve been getting a noticeable amount of questions about purchasing fabric lately! In a general answer to your question, fat quarters are a handy size to collect—variety over yardage. There are always exceptions, of course, such as large print designs. This Saturday’s post (2/17/24) addresses fabric choices for collage, you may find it helpful!

      • Thanks so much! I can’t tell you how much I enjoy your posts and your very unique, marvelous work! Some day I will get up my nerve to join one of your classes. Right now, I’m starting to gather my fabrics to begin my first project, the spiral.
Thanks again for all your inspiration.
