It’s not too late to join in with me and over 50 others via Zoom as we create fantastical fabric collage “Quilter’s Trophy Fish.” We recorded last Thursday’s first session so you can catch up quick before tonight’s second session. Or take your time watching both week’s videos over the weekend (a fish collage can be a good option to football, if so desired). You even receive a free fish pattern to give you a head start. Click here for more info.
Above photos: my in-progress demo fish—beginning, middle, and (at top) end of first draft—adjustments and details and background ideas to come in today’s presentation!
Interested but not sure? Maybe this will help. Below is a time-lapse video of me finishing the first draft of my sample fish (three hours condensed to three minutes—don’t blink!). I needed to finish this step prior to this evening’s presentation, where I’ll be demonstrating the next few steps of the second draft. By the way, if you’re already signed up for this February fish work-along, check your email for a special “10 minute extended edition” video—a little extra to inspire you on your own fishy first draft.
The object is to simply play with our fabrics in a loose and creative way. In the end, we’ll have created a whole school of fantastical collaged “trophy fish” to show off those great fabrics we’ve collected in our stash.
Fish come in a variety of interesting shapes and wild colors, with fins and spots and stripes and all sorts of embellishments. I’ve found out that as long as you include a head, a body, a couple of fins and a tail, there’s no doubt it’s a fish. It’s the type of subject where you can let your imagination run as wild as the colors, and it’ll still look like a fish.
This mini-course will feature four weekly live demos on Zoom—recorded to view or review anytime—plus homework for you (and your fish) over the following week. See the links below for more information or to register.

Where do you buy your fabric at! Or what is the best fabric to buy? Do you sell fabric packs? Your fabric is so vibrant and I don’t have that in my stash. Thanks
Hi Deb! I’ve been getting a noticeable amount of questions about purchasing fabric lately! This Saturday’s post (2/17/24) addresses fabric choices for collage, and I’ll try to address some of the questions you ask. Thanks!
Hi again, Deb, I collect fabric from all around, but I did write a post a couple years back about two favorite shops to buy fabric: https://susancarlson.com/2021/10/02/some-of-my-favorite-fabrics/
