In the past few days I completed testing three new brands of duckbill scissors on fabrics for my newest fabric palette—adding new photos and information to our already updated Scissors for Fabric Collage post of last week! In that Saturday’s post are also “further thoughts” and a new video on how to use these odd-looking 6″ duckbill appliqué scissors for fabric collage. Check out the newest version here or through the Throwback Thursday link below.

A week ago I was nearing the end of 5 days in Tucson, Arizona, teaching another wonderful group of collage artists. The fish-in-progress you see above was a class project that sat on a table in the middle of the classroom for anyone and everyone to add to. (To create your own fabric collage fish you may want to join me in my four-week Thursday night Follow Along, see below.) I had a couple ulterior motives for this group project, one was to test run the three pairs of new duckbill scissors that I had brought with me. The other motive will be revealed later this month when I talk about the class itself.

However, class weeks being what they are, who has time to document the pros and cons of a particular pair of scissors? It certainly wasn’t me. I had to wait until I got home to do that.

In a couple weeks I’ll be telling you all about my rowdy Tucson class. The Wild West atmosphere was infectious, and before you knew it, I was demonstrating my new scissors with a little quick-draw action—captured below. Here’s to my very fun students, and to Mary, who jumped in to capture my very unrehearsed moves. 😉

Further Thoughts On… Scissors for Fabric Collage

Beginning Tonight, February 1, 2024, 7pm Eastern Time!

Thursday Night Follow-Along: Quilter’s Fantastical Trophy Fish

Part One of Four: Getting Started—Patterns and Fabrics

If this looks like fun, you may be interested to join me via Zoom in my four-week series “Thursday Night Follow-Along: Quilter’s Trophy Fish.” Create your own fish as I make my own and show examples of others. The object is to simply play with fabric, have fun, and be creative.

Fish come in interesting shapes and wild colors, with fins and spots and stripes and all sorts of embellishments. I’ve found out that as long as you include a head, a body, a couple of fins and a tail, there’s no doubt it’s a fish! It’s the type of subject where you can let your imagination run as wild as the colors, and it’ll still look like a fish.

This mini-course will feature four weekly live demos on Zoom—recorded to view later if needed—plus homework for you (and your fish) over the following week. See the links below for more information or to register.
