While the official “Day One” of my first ever Live Online Class is this Monday, we actually kicked off the class this week with one-on-one coaching sessions with each of my students. The twelve 45-minute meetings were conducted to ensure to that all my students were ready to begin collaging as soon as class opened. We talked about their subjects, the tracings made for their patterns, fabric selection, any technical issues, and just got to know each other.

Deciding to add this feature—individual coaching sessions before class—and now having worked through them, has solidified for me that live online classes will work for fabric collage.

So, I’m excited for class to start on Monday. But I’m just as excited to announce two more online classes this spring. Both classes are entitled “Fabric Collage Menagerie,” which just means that your subject matter is limited to the animal kingdom.

The main difference between the two classes is the host—so please click on individual links to sign up for the different months. For April’s class, I’ll be partnering with MISA, Madeline Island School of the Arts. When a couple classes I had scheduled with them were cancelled (again), we decided to try the online format with those students, during a week when one of the in-person classes would have run. That virtual class is now open for general signup as is my May class.

Another feature I’m introducing to class is prerecorded daily demonstrations. Rather than using class time to demonstrate a process or idea, students will view the recordings before class, then during the first hour of class I will answer any questions and further demonstrate if need be.

Below is the pre-class video we’re sending to my online students, reminding them (if they haven’t already) to check out the Spiral Exercise (included in the Fabric Collage Master Class) as fabric collage practice prior, and even during class.

We decided to include the video in this post to (once again) encourage all my blog readers to have some fun with creating spirals in fabric collage. It was almost a year ago we released the Spiral eWorkshop as a stand-alone online project in response to the pandemic, and the spiral has been revisited in Thursday Night in My Studio Live! presentations,  a blog post here and a students’ spirals post here.

In this video I mention two books I’ll be using in my classes—online or live—as sources of inspiration: Bird by Bird, by Anne Lamott, and Wild Mind by Natalie Goldberg. The first I’ve read and reread for years, and the second only recently “found.”
