The student celestial faces in the following Finish Line post—especially the suns—are almost all based on the same pattern, yet they are all so very different, reflecting the tastes, skills, and personalities of their makers. I love the loose and exuberant style Mary Klarfeld used for her quilt “Indian Summer” above.

The equinox—the date when the length of daylight and darkness is the same—is coming up within the next week. It’s a celestial event not many keep track of, but I’ve been in a sun/moon state of mind recently. One thing Tom and I had planned on for 2020 was a Celestial Portraits add-on module for the Fabric Collage Online Master Class Manual, and we’re taking the time now to figure out a new multi-media way to present and teach these heavenly subjects via text, photos, and recorded video. This module is intended to be both for those who simply want step-by-step instructions for the projects—either a sun or moon face—and for those who want to learn the basics of portraiture as a stepping stone toward a more realistic portrait.

Stay tuned (as they say) for more information about the Celestial Portraits module. And remember that you can submit your own Finish Line quilt of any subject matter using the link below.
