One of the ideas that my students have the toughest time wrapping their heads around is the idea of working in sequence. There’s an order in which makes your fabric collage image a little easier to create. Specifically, the things that are in front, those that are nearest the viewer, should be done first. I made my first stab at explaining this in today’s Throwback Thursday post, using several examples to show that beginning with what’s in front results in an image that is more faithful to your design, while making the process much easier.

Nowhere is the idea of starting with what’s in front more important than when doing a fabric collage face. What sticks out furthest on a face? Why it’s clear as the nose … Yeah, it’s the nose! Tonight, in the second of this month’s Thursday Night in My Studio Live! presentations, I’ll be showing examples of fabric collage noses and describing how to create them, and why it makes perfect “scents” to start there.

For an up-to-date listing of current and past presentations, visit the front page of this website and scroll down to the Thursday Night in My Studio Live! section.
