This will be a short follow-up post of information that I didn’t want to get missed in my regularly scheduled weekly post.

First: I wanted to share a blog post I just received this week from eQuilter.com: Information about Sewing Masks in the time of COVID-19. I realize that sewers and quilters have already mobilized with face masks in production and drop off points set up. But in case there’s a few of you out there (like me) who are in need of consolidated information about how to approach the face mask issue—maybe getting overwhelmed with fabric and pattern recommendations, ties or elastic, pleated or curved—I found this post from Luana Rubin to be a well organized one-stop resource to check out.

Luana is the owner of eQuilter and I would have been teaching at her Boulder, CO location in a week. She’s made a quick switch in her own plans to coordinate mask-making for state government workers who have to keep working through this crisis. As it says at the top of the eQuilter blog post, *This page is being updated continuously ”“ SCROLL DOWN for free patterns, VIDEOS and other info!*

Second: Amid all the dire and upsetting headlines, I followed an alternative headline to Pluto Living on YouTube. Plenty of people have found their way to Pluto (the mini-schnauzer) already, but if you haven’t, she’s got a fresh and four-legged perspective on “this time of crisis.” She makes me laugh. Tom gave me the hairy eyeball when I sent him the link a couple days ago, but this morning I caught him watching her newest Pluto Service Announcement.

Thanks to Luana, for her time in collecting all the mask making information and links. And thanks to Pluto, for sharing her words of wisdom.

Please stay safe and well.

  • Thank you…just ran in and made one. I’ll probably make several assembly line style..I’ve heard that Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fl .
    needs them.

  • Thanks for Pluto living
Silly. It’s what is needed now
    Enjoyed it
Thanks to you also for all ur enlightening posts

  • Just watched a video on masks, not recommended as does not protect from covid19, just gives others protection from you should you have it. Also gives people wearing them a false sense of protection.

  • I live in Riverside County where it is recommended everyone, in addition to physical distance, wear a mask. I used the Deaconess pattern. I am a self taught quilter. Sewing is a challenge. I adjusted the pattern to make the ties .25″ wider (which for me made a huge difference). When I attached the ties to the mask, I started in the middle of the mask and sewed outward so that the middle of the tie/mask junction was reinforced.
Thank you for this information. I am going to make some for the wonderful people who work so hard at my local grocery store. You have enabled me to protect myself and thereby, protect others.
