Trust me, there is a story behind the title of the portrait of my son Sam, “Peace, Love, Tie-Dye, Save the Whales.”

Portraits of kids wind up being like taking a single frame out of a movie that’s running. It captures a moment of their lives that is too soon gone by. In this case, the moment was the period in his early teens when Sam had long, flowing locks. If he hadn’t had long hair, I might never have made the connections that led me to make the quilt as I did. Again, read the post to discover why.

Those locks will make a return visit in this week’s regular Saturday post when I talk about how to handle hair in fabric collage. Here’s a hint: it’s NOT cutting out thousands of fabric “strands.” As another example of how to handle hair I’ll include some pictures of “Monarch Maia,” my newest quilt portrait.
