While taking the summer off from teaching, I did have two lectures of a (relatively) local variety. The first lecture was at Cocheco Quilters Guild in Dover, New Hampshire. As I will explain in this week’s regular Saturday post, Cocheco was the first quilt guild I was a member of. I was also invited to speak at Maine Quilts, our state’s largest quilt show, held in the capital, Augusta. I’ll report on Maine Quilts in this week’s post as well.
For Throwback Thursday I thought it would be appropriate to reintroduce my quilt, “Elements.” This quilt was inspired by a Cocheco guild challenge in 1992 to represent the four elements of nature: earth, air, fire, and water. At the time I was making portraits in fabric, so I decided to personify the elements in a quilt. The quilt went on the win best in show at the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen’s “Living with Crafts” exhibit. More importantly, as you will read, it was a turning point in my style and technique.
