In this week’s Throwback Thursday I discuss the beginning of my career in fabric collage. Back then I was creating small quilts to sell in galleries and art shows. I was also working in a frame shop, mounting, matting and and framing artwork. Fish turned out to be a popular subject for these new fabric collage quilts of mine and because of their relatively small size I wound up framing a lot of them under glass.
This Saturday in a new post, I will discuss how the experience of framing my own and other people’s work trained my eye for how a piece of art is cropped. Cropping is an often overlooked but important aspect of composition. I hope you’ll find this Top Tip useful in your own quilts.

Susan Carlson Ongoing Open Studio Hours: Weekly Fabric Collage Coaching
Tuesdays, November–December, 2025
1/2 hour time slots, $65 each
One afternoon a week, I’ll be available to help, encourage, and coach anyone who needs it—between the hours of 1pm-4pm Eastern Time. This could be to continue working on an in-progress collage, or to begin a new project—whatever is desired.
Sign-up can be for one day or multiple days—every week, every two weeks, once a month or once only. These sessions will be recorded and emailed to you, just as coaching sessions are, so they can be referred to as needed.
