Ten Years! Wow!

Today marks exactly 10 years ago to the day that the first post of this blog was published! That inaugural post was about my recently completed 20-foot long saltwater crocodile quilt, “Crocodylus Smylus” (detail above).

Since then we, Tom and I, have published a post every week. Sure, a few times (count on one hand) there’s been technical issues when a post didn’t go out at 4am Saturday morning as planned. However, aside from those snafus, for the last decade readers have been able to brew a morning cuppa and sit down to peruse a new post.

This means we have published hundreds of posts on a variety of subjects. We started out with posts about my quilts (Quilt Stories) and used them to demonstrate the fabric collage technique (How To). We also created posts about my teaching engagements (On the Road) and soon after that we invited readers to send in their own finished fabric collage quilts to share (The Fabric Collage Finish Line).

As the years passed, we realized that newer readers had missed out on some of our best earlier posts, so we started sending out a repeat post on Thursdays (Throwback Thursday). These posts also are sometimes used to keep you aware of upcoming fabric collage learning opportunities. In more recent years we’ve gone back and revisited how-to posts in our Further Thoughts On… series. At times I’ve offered you a glimpse into my studio (This Week in My Studio) usually as I’ve a project in the works or in preparation for a class or presentation. And most recently we’ve added Dispatches, shorter posts made up mainly of photos sent to Tom during the weeks when I’m away from home and studio.

This blog has been my primary way of keeping in touch with students and followers, informing them not only of things that have happened but also of upcoming events, such as shows and classes. If you aren’t already receiving this free blog in your email, you can subscribe here.

    • Hi Tammy! Thank you for following along for so long, your name is quite familiar from past comments, such as from last week! Knowing there’s folks like you out there who are learning this technique, creating art and having fun, gives us the good energy to keep the posts rolling week after week!

  • Congratulations on 10 years! I love reading each post, but the ones that stand out to me are your “on the road” essays. You have a great eye for the most interesting people and places you encounter as you travel! Your “how to” posts are timely reminders of the finer points of creating collage art. I also enjoy seeing your student’s work–I learn so much from everyone else. And finally, may I add that Tom’s kayak videos are favorites. His videos on the water bring the sights and sounds of the natural world to everyone who views them. Here’s to the next 10 years and beyond!

    • Hi Juliet! Always a pleasure to read your thoughtful comments. Great feedback on our blogpost categories, thanks! Sounds like you’ll enjoy today’s “special second post” with classwork from my Italy class, and next week’s post with our class field trips. And I’ll push Tom to re-post his kayaking videos into some Throwback Thursday posts! 🙂

  • I want to say thank you for the past 10 years of Saturday morning inspiration and learning. Your blog is a definite highlight of my Saturday (and Thursday) mornings. I have never deleted one of your posts in all those years and periodically return to older posts to reread them. Again, thank you!

  • Thank you so much, Susan and Tom! I have been needing new collage inspiration, and the scarab pattern is just what I have needed! Wishing you many joys this holiday season!!!

  • Thank you for the free pattern, Susan! After following you for some time, this little dude will be my first attempt at animal collage, and I know I will enjoy the process.
