By the time you read this post, Hurricane Milton will have hit the coast of Florida. Two weeks ago, during my class in Bar Harbor, Maine, it was another hurricane watch as three students in my class live in Florida. And in the time between, we’ve all heard more about the devastation that Hurricane Helene caused in other states, especially in North Carolina, just a couple hours drive over a mountain from where my parents lived for many years. I’ve been thinking a lot about people I know or have met, those I’ve taught and places I’ve visited—photo above, was taken from the end of the Naples Pier.

In February 2016, I taught in two locations in Florida—St. Augustine and Naples—both of which have been named in the path of this newest hurricane. A few years earlier, I taught in Sarasota, Florida, now a projected landfall for Milton.

This Throwback Thursday post sends out fond memories of my Florida classes, wishes of safety to all, and images of colorful and whimsical fabric collage artwork—good therapy at any time—to soothe and distract when needed.

  • Love your photo. Did not know you had taught in Florida before. As we sit here in Harpswell, we also have a home in Sarasota and are hoping for the best. We are about 4-5 miles inland. Nice of you to think of those so terribly affected and displaced; I can’t even imagine. I am the former student who has YET to finish her nautilus!!!
Would you even consider teaching in Florida again?

  • We were lucky in St. Augustine. Lots of wind and rain, but no damage or power loss! Thank you for your kind thoughts during these stormy weather events!
