Where do I start? That’s a fair question to ask if you are making your first (or even your thirty-first) fabric collage quilt. Let’s assume you’ve chosen your subject and made your line drawing to work from. Now where do you go? I always encourage (in fact, I often insist) that students create a fabric collage palette.
As I say in this post, neither your entire fabric stash nor even the fabrics you have chosen for your collage are your palette. You haven’t created a palette until you can see bits and pieces of your fabrics spread out in front of you—then audition them against your design to see if they just may work. The way you create this palette is by cutting your precious yardage into smaller, hand-sized chunks. (Not ALL of it, of course—just a piece or two from each fabric you’ve chosen!)
This post will lead you through the making of your fabric collage palette, preparing you for spontaneity in assembling your next fabric collage quilt.
