Yes, I realize I talk a lot about creating a fabric palette, but I do have a specific reason to refer back to it in this Throwback Thursday post. You see, in this Saturday’s regular post, I’ll be giving you a preview of my Quilt Africa Online Summit 2022 lecture by showing you the fabric palette I created using many of the lovely African fabrics (below) sent to me by organizer Miriam Galadima-Benson. These are not at all the types of fabrics you’ll read about in this Throwback Thursday, but I’m happy to say I did create a bold and beautiful palette for fabric collage and am excited to show you something new!

You can still sign up for next week’s Quilt Africa Online Summit 2022 on July 6-8, and attend my full online lecture, plus the other lectures, demos, and workshops from the other presenters at the event by following the link below.

Hope to see you there!

Quilt Africa 2023

But why all the emphasis on a fabric palette in the first place? It took years of teaching for me to realize just how important it is to create your palette first, and I’ve come to believe that nothing makes for an easier beginning to your fabric collage project than a pre-cut fabric palette, ready to pick up and place onto your drawn design. It speeds up the fabric selection process (since you’ve already done that) and allows you to dive right into the fun part—auditioning and arranging those chunks of fabric onto your drawn design.

And then there’s the issue of how to cut out the “hand-sized” chunks that will make up your palette. So read up on it in today’s Throwback Thursday, below. And then tune in Saturday for more ideas!
