Fabric is our medium: our oils, our watercolors, our inks. Unfortunately our choice of medium can take up a lot of space. Plus there’s so much more variety! Color, pattern, texture! How do we keep it all stored safely and conveniently? That’s the issue I addressed in today’s Throwback Thursday. Actually I addressed it a couple times—as you’ll see in the post—first back in 2016 then updated in 2021.

There are obvious ways to organize fabric:

  • Color (reds, blues, greens)
  • Pattern (Aboriginal, flowers and leaves, animal prints)
  • Fiber content (cottons, synthetics, sheers)
  • Novelty fabrics (butterflies, coral reef, maps)

Then there are less obvious (some known only to me) ways:

  • Fabrics I collected on a particular trip (New Zealand, Yellowknife)
  • Fabrics by a particular designer (Kaffe Fassett, Jane Sassaman)
  • Future quilts I have in mind (Daisy, Hassan, and Max)

None of these schemes begins to address the issue particular to fabric collage: scraps! What to do with all those little bits. I do cover that in the post and this Saturday in your regular post you’ll get another glimpse of my scraps and how I’ve used them in my quilts. So stay tuned!
