In this week’s brand new Saturday post, I’ll be sharing another wonderful batch of finished quilts from you, my blog readers. The Finish Line posts are always a popular read as the creators share their fabric collage journeys. A big decision along the way to a finished quilt is the background behind the subject—a thought that’s often overlooked, until you get to that point in the process.

And then it hits you: backgrounds can be hard. Hard because of the almost unlimited choices backgrounds can pose—it’s like you’re back to square one, “What do I do now? Where do I start?” But once you come up with an idea for a background, it’s often quite straightforward, though there are some tricks that could make it simpler. So getting that idea for a background is usually the toughest part. To help the decision making process, I propose (in the TBT post below), that you ask yourself a series of questions that define the “story” of your quilt.

  1. What’s the subject?
  2. Where is the subject?
  3. What is it doing?
  4. Why did you choose this subject?
  5. What’s important about the subject?

Answering some or all of these questions should give you a real sense of how you can use the background to help tell the story of the subject you have chosen. Enjoy and then come back in a couple days to see how others have solved their backgrounds.
