The tendency when creating a bird in fabric collage is to start thinking how to make each individual feather—which could quickly become both tedious and overwhelming. Instead I encourage students of fabric collage to think about feathers the same way they would think about skin or fur: in terms of value, texture, and contour.

We interrupt this post with a special announcement:

Last minute cancellations have created four openings for an upcoming class in Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

Maybe I’ll see you there!

Feathers such as those on my budgie Kiiora (above) are best tackled with areas of like value or texture, and employing the movement or contour of the printed designs of the fabrics. Keeping those things in mind, one can create the illusion of feathers without cutting hundreds of tiny individual feathers, which I would never recommend.

In my recent September Live Online Class, the only avian subject was made by Sylvie Aguilar who created an elegant gray goose in a range of purples values. This Saturday in your regular post, you’ll be able to see how Sylvie successfully created even the smallest of feathers by suggesting them rather than creating each one. Plus, you’ll get to meet three happy tongue-lolling dogs as well!
