During my career teaching fabric collage I’ve made a few good friends, both among colleagues and students. Darlene Determan has attended many of my classes, possibly for a dozen or more years (we can’t quite remember anymore), but more importantly she’s now one of my best friends. She especially liked it when I was hosting my own Harpswell, Maine Quilt Retreats, as her home base is in not-too-far-away Boston. But most recently, Darlene attended my May 2021 Live Online Class.

Each summer Darlene and her husband, Len, spend time at the ol’ family homestead on Old Orchard Beach, Maine. At least once during the season I drive down the coast for an overnight or two (as I was able to just a couple weeks ago), where we can chat away as we walk the beach and sip our coffees at dawn, and maybe work on an art project together later.

We definitely have a mutual love of color and pattern, and I’ve received a couple compliments on “my” quilts that were actually Darlene’s. So please enjoy this TBT trip down memory lane with the bright, warm, summer-drenched colors of Darlene’s impressive collection of quilts.
