What are your summer plans? This summer as with past summers I’ve scheduled no teaching so I have time to work in the studio—among other summertime endeavors. Studio time includes starting on a new fabric collage quilt, but I also plan to finish up an in-progress portrait. My “Blue Moon Sam” (working title), has finally reached its third draft—adding sheer fabrics for a celestial glow. So in answer to an often asked question, looks like I’ll have a couple projects in the works at the same time.

In this TBT, you’ll see how the third fabric collage portrait of my son Sam, began. The design inspired a pair of Thursday Night in My Studio Live! presentations: “Customizing a Pattern—Sun Portrait: Thursday Night in My Studio Live!” and “Customizing a Pattern—Moon Portrait: Thursday Night in My Studio Live!”, both of which are available to download on demand through the Thursday Night in My Studio Live! showcase.

Maybe this summer (or winter if you’re in the southern Hemisphere) you too are ready to start (or continue working on) a fabric collage quilt. Beginning this Saturday, I’ll try to help you out with that in a series of three weekly blog posts reviewing the step-by-step technique of fabric collage. So in a way, you can work along with me! Until then, check out the inspiration and beginning of Sam’s portrait in this week’s Throwback Thursday post.

In Progress Part 1: The Third Fabric Collage Portrait of My Son Sam

PS—Speaking of Sam and summertime, a brand new crop of bright and colorful Oma’s Pumpkins has been harvested and Sam will have them ready to display in the Etsy shop he manages for his Oma, on Sunday—noon Eastern Time. So if you’re interested in my mom’s stuffed creations (and I know many of you are), keep an eye out for that post!
