You’ve nearly completed the main image of your fabric collage quilt, but now you realize with horror that you have no idea what you’re going to do about the background!
Does this situation sound familiar? Fear not. This is a common reaction for many, very often including myself. I have found that simply asking yourself a few specific questions will help. I always start with, “What is the story of your subject?” Is there a particular place or time associated with the image? As I describe in this week’s Throwback Thursday below, asking questions such as these often reveals a theme on which you can base your background.
Coming up this Saturday, in your regular blog post, students from past Quilt Gallery classes will tell the stories of their subjects (and backgrounds) and share the completed quilts in a new edition of The Finish Line.

I’m currently working on a quilt in this exact style. I’ve never done one quite like it before. I got my main character done (ish) and laid out on batting on top of backing fabric. Centered. Now how to proceed to the background?
My eyes and back we’re tired so I took a break on my recliner with phone. Up popped your article on what I was doing! I love serendipity! I was happy to see the ideas floating in my brain being validated. I was on the right track. I know my story, I see my idea of building the background around my center character is doable. I’m so excited! I’m off and running, as soon as I rest a bit more. I’ll be pinning things on now not gluing and hope it will carry over to my frame in good time.
