I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to get your pattern (or design) drawn accurately before you start piecing your fabric collage quilt. In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we revisit that first step so that you can see where it all begins before we get to this week’s regular Saturday post, which is a Finish Line of completed quilts.

This latest batch of Finish Line quilts will be made up of those that were brought to Show-and-Share at Empty Spools Seminars at Asilomar where I recently taught two sessions. These were students from past years, showing off the work that they finished on their own after taking the class. The quilts are as usual imaginative, colorful, and as individual as the quilters who made them.

You’ll be impressed. But when you see these finished art quilts, remember: they all started here, with a simple, pencil-drawn design.

  • I enjoyed taking your class in Harpswell last June. I was a little overwhelmed at first because I did not understand the need for so many fabrics. My most valuable take away from your class is the importance of the line drawing on the muslin. I did not accurately transfer this image and have had to rework some portions. It is important to have the line drawing to show the definition of different “body parts.” My colors are not realistic, so it is important to get the lines correct. I look forward to showing my completed portraits one day!
