Tonight when I give this week’s online presentation of my Captivating Cats Follow Along, I’ll have two cat portraits as samples. First will Suki the calico cat, with a slide sequence showing her progress from last week (photo below) to this week (photo above). The live demo will pick up with creating her captivatingly green eyes.

The second part of the live presentation will be considering backgrounds for the last week’s other feline, Punkin the Halloween cat (photo below). When the line drawing of a collaged image is filled in with a first draft, as Punkin’s portrait is, it’s a good time to look at backgrounds. Backgrounds are still considered part of a first draft since they also cover up (or replace) the foundation fabric.

What I choose as a background for Punkin’s portrait can help tell his story. Depending on what I pick, I may catch issues of contrast between the image and the background. Does it blend in too much? Are the adjoining patterns confusing? I can work out solutions to these issues now, before the collage is what I consider “done.”

I’ll be suggesting  today’s Throwback Thursday post as reading for my Captivating Cats participants. Even if you aren’t attending, you may find this TBT selection helpful—giving a checklist of questions you could ask yourself as you consider what may be a good background for your own fabric collage subject.

Join me today, Thursday, November 5, 2026, 7 pm Eastern Time—to learn more about the fabric collage technique and to ask questions live—in my Captivating Cats Follow Along. All sessions are recorded and links emailed directly to participants, so it’s never too late to get in at the beginning of the four Thursday presentations since you can view or review the videos at any time that works for you.

As a teaser, here is a time lapse below, of the first draft—getting the foundation fabric covered—of the Halloween version, “Punkin,” who I created as a demonstration for this Follow Along.

Join me tonight as I present the second session of my Captivating Cat portrait #2—the calico cat version—live from my studio.
