What is a Follow-Along?

These Thursday evening series are opportunities to cut-loose and play with our fabrics. I say “our” since a Follow-Along is set up for me to demonstrate how I approach a fabric collage—allowing you to follow-along on your own time with your own stash of fabrics.

If you’re new to fabric collage, this would be good way to familiarize yourself with the collage technique which includes how to “look” at your fabrics as well as how to “see” the details of your subject and how to combine the two.

I provide a pattern for participants to easily get started with a project that is an introduction to (or continuation of) the fabric collage technique that I teach. It’s a project that is meant to be playful and a “let’s see what happens when…” sort of exercise. In a follow along, I’m showing you how I work through a collage for myself.

Past Follow Alongs have been fish, insects (a cicada specifically), and a gecko. These weekly presentations are basically a series of lectures with demos. Some people follow along with their own project, some people just take in what I have to show and share.

Captivating Cats Follow-Along

The subject I’ve chosen for this October/November class is a cat portrait. It’s not uncommon to have cat subjects occur in a class, and through the years of teaching and observing all the cats I’ve “met,” I’ve realized that there are facial traits that appear nearly universal to most cats.

With this Follow-Along, I’m demonstrating my fabric collage process from the very beginning—the idea. A couple years ago I created the design above, of my sister’s cat Soot. Now, with the idea of a “Captivating Cats” Follow-Along, I’ve adapted Soot’s face into a “universal cat” design (emailed to registrants upon registration).

In the course of the four presentations, I cover my thoughts and ideas about subject, design, fabric selection, the cutting of a fabric palette, the placing and gluing of fabric pieces. You’ll be able to see the progress of the collage as I advance through the steps and technique of how I create my art.

After each week’s presentation, I’ll suggest some “homework” for participants to then follow-along for their own cat portrait. By the end of the four weeks, I’ll have my Captivating Cat ready (or almost ready) to quilt, and you’ll have the class available to complete at your own pace.

Have no fear of the word, “homework.” If the timing for this class isn’t optimal for you or the time you have to dedicate to a new project, each week’s presentation is recorded and a link to view, or review, is emailed to you—yours to access that week, next month, next year, or whenever, forever.

I’ll be demonstrating how I can take this new design and create a totally fantastical (like a Halloween theme) cat portrait, or adapt it for a personalized image of a familiar feline face—such as Suki (below left)—they’ll be fun subjects for me and I look forward to sharing the process with you. I’ll teach from my own photos of family cats as various examples of cat faces—short-haired, long-haired, solid-colored, calico-ed, striped—adding a bit extra color and fantasy along the way.

My own Djinni, above right, may get a second portrait—her first portrait, detail above, is from “Golden Temple of the Good Girls.” I’m now considering how her markings could fit into my “Captivating Cat” portrait pattern, and what fabrics would illustrate her (lovable yet challenging) personality. We shall see…. Will you join me?
