The Finish Line quilts included in today’s Throwback Thursday are from students who all participated in the Road to California Showcase 2019 quilt show. All the quilts were started in one or another of my classes. I couldn’t be prouder of the achievements of these and all my past and present students. As a teacher, each student success is a reinforcement of the satisfaction I get from helping these artists achieve their visions.
Soon I’ll be able to share pictures of the student work from my most recent class, which was held in Italy. I’m so proud of the work we managed to get done between the other fantastic events we participated in. Saffron dying, museum tours, pasta making demonstrations—yet we still had time for fabric collage! I’ll be returning to Italy next October 2026 for another class with similar field trips. Susan Carlson Open Studio Hours: Weekly Fabric Collage Coaching
Tuesdays, November–December, 2025
1/2 hour time slots, $65 each
Sign-up can be for one day or multiple days—every week, every two weeks, once a month or once only. These sessions will be recorded and emailed to you, just as coaching sessions are, so they can be referred to as needed.

I’ve met with Susan three times since our class (once a week) and each session has been inspiring, motivating, and very helpful in terms of defining my path forward (and also creating some accountability relative to that path…). Before each session, I think about what areas I would like to focus on and send off a photo with my questions. Meanwhile, preparing for my session helps me make my project a priority so I see ongoing progress, which is gratifying.
