As I prepare for a very busy next few weeks—which includes a teaching trip to Italy (!)—I’m thinking ahead to the teaching I have scheduled for when I return: a Live Online Fabric Collage Class in November and one-on-one coaching during my next round of Open Studio Hours.

I enjoy both ways of interacting with my students. The 5-day online class of course is very intense and focused as I meet with individual students throughout each day for a week. My Open Studio Hours, are set up as 1/2 hour time-slots on Tuesdays—dates scheduled in four week blocks.

Currently I have openings for both the online class and the Open Studio hours. See below for more information.

November 2025 Live Online Class

This five day class takes place via Zoom. Over the last five years Tom and I have learned a lot from holding these online classes. We strive to improve it each session by adding to the student experience so that it most closely resembles the live classroom while taking advantage of the features that Zoom offers, such as on-screen annotation and recording.

This particular class will be for those who have taken a class with me before. It doesn’t need to have been an online course, but having a basic understanding of and experience in fabric collage is a pre-requisite. We move a little faster in this class and spend the vast majority of our time in one-on-one sessions.

I have taken other online fabric collage classes with other teachers, and while I learned from all of them, I feel like I struck gold when I discovered Susan and began to learn from her. Her attention to detail, her artistic vision and her teaching style make spending time with her very valuable. She creates a supportive, safe environment for learning, and giving/receiving feedback, which I think is essential for learning. Susan’s use of annotation is so very helpful. I think the biggest benefit of the online format is that it allows me to work in my studio, with all of my fabrics around, and to be able to have lunch with my hubby. The only drawback that comes to mind is not being able to give Susan an actual hug!! —Dale Goldberg

I quite literally have learned to quilt in online classes. This one is unique because of the amount of thoughtful and high quality individual feedback that is provided. —Pati Vitt

As a teacher, Susan is exceptional. Not only is she an accomplished artist, but she is able to get students to see the subtle changes in shape and value that make up a subject. Plus, she has a special way of encouraging us to break through preconceived boxes. For me, that was giving my towheaded grandson blue green hair! So fun! And he’s going to love it. I have done other Zoom classes; while the teaching was good, I’ve never experienced the excellent detailed feedback that I received from Susan. —Cathy Holmes

From an Open Studio Hours participant who also recently took a class with me:

I can’t recommend enough this new format. I’ve met with Susan three times since our class (once a week) and each session has been inspiring, motivating, and very helpful in terms of defining my path forward (and also creating some accountability relative to that path…). Before each session, I think about what areas I would like to focus on and send off a photo with my questions. In this way, I get from Susan exactly the support I need, plus a video recording to remember it. Meanwhile, preparing for my session helps me make my project a priority so I see ongoing progress, which is gratifying.

Honestly, this was the format I was hoping for. I told Susan I wanted to write a testimonial about it because I was so happy she was offering it. So, if you’re like me and a periodic check-in keeps you learning, growing, and doing your best work, sign up for coaching. Maybe I’ll see you there (you get to listen in on other sessions during the open studio you attend). —LeahGrace Kayler
