Your appetite for fish should be satisfied this week as I serve up two portions, one today and one in your regular Saturday post.
As an appetizer, today’s Throwback Thursday revisits my fabric collage fish named “Gombessa,” which is the African word for the fish we know as a coelacanth. Coelacanth some may know are also known as the “dino fish” as it was thought that this species had gone extinct tens of millions of years ago during the time of the dinosaurs. Rediscovered early in the twentieth century, these fascinating creatures live deep in the Indian Ocean off Africa and Indonesia.
This Saturday my post will cover the fish class I recently presented at the National Quilt Museum, where it so happens “Gombessa” is currently displayed along with 11 of my other quilts. I had twenty students, each creating their own fish (mostly based on my patterns) using their own fabrics and in their own style, so there will be many “species” of fish to present.
