This week in your regular Saturday post I’ll be showing off the work of my recent Loose Ends students, who signed up for independent study during a scheduled class week. They selected two days, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, to work on projects they had (mostly) started in previous online fabric collage classes. In essence, they brought their in-progress quilts back to a class in order to work on their second or third drafts.

Drafts, you say? Isn’t working in drafts something writers do? Well, yes, but the same methodology can be applied to fabric collage. It was reading Anne Lamott’s book “Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life,” that made it clear to me that I was working in drafts myself and that I ought to be teaching my students to do the same.

Get something down, then fix it up, is one of the many nuggets of wisdom I have borrowed from Anne that I pass on to students—this would apply to their transition from first to second draft in a fabric collage.

So to prepare for seeing the work of my Loose Ends students this Saturday, read about how “Bird by Bird” can help you break down the process of fabric collage into manageable steps.
