I thought I should take a moment today to repost and remind you about this online quilting summit that begins tomorrow (!), in case any of you (like me) forgot. I woke up this morning (Happy July 4th, by the way!) thinking, “wait, isn’t there something I’m doing tomorrow on the 5th…?” Yes! There is! And I now have my ticket! 🙂

So if you too would like to attend yet have been too busy, distracted, or (fill in your reasoning here), or even missed this post from last week, here ya go—click on button below for more info:

Quilt Africa 2023

I’m re-sending this special blog post today to (again) invite you to The Quilt Africa International Summit 2023, an online 4-day annual event with multiple speakers and classes celebrating the beauty and boldness of traditional African print fabrics.

Last year at this time, I was preparing for my own first-time presentation with Quilt Africa—a lecture and demonstration of my (limited) experience using these very large scale and vibrantly contrasting designs—the collaged fish above was the demo subject. I readily admit that African fabrics are not part of my go-to stack when selecting my (usual) collage fabrics, but I was up for the challenge of something new when Quilt Africa owner and organizer, Miriam Galadima Benson invited me to join the list of 2022 presenters. And I had a creative blast doing it.

I would love to be a part of this event again, though this year was not the one for it. However, I am going to be in the audience taking in this year’s line-up and soaking up the inspiration and energy I saw take place last year.

Quilt Africa 2023

Last year, quite a few of my readers attended and had great things to say about Quilt Africa—the Summit itself and also the quality of Miriam’s on-line African fabric store. She began Quilt Africa in an effort to spread the understanding, appreciation, and use of these traditional prints. How exactly do you apply these colorful and distinctive designs in quilt-making? Well, that’s exactly what this annual Quilt Africa International Summit is all about.

Here are my 2022 blog post links that referred to last year’s Quilt Africa Summit, to get a feel of what is coming your way this year:

Talking about using African fabrics in fabric collage:

And a post from February 25, 2023—NOT On the Road: January 2023 Live Online Fabric Collage Class—Part 2: Spice of Life—that includes the African fabric inspiration that Brenda Carter found in last year’s Summit and how she applied it to interpreting a Canadian ram as her fabric collage class subject, as well as a portrait created as part of the July 2022 Quilt Africa Summit.

I’m looking forward to these four days of inspiration—July 5-8, 2023—maybe I’ll see you there!
