Perhaps the biggest fabric collage challenge one can give oneself is to create a portrait of a person. I admire the courage it takes to choose to create a portrait in fabric, and I admire the perseverance it requires to finish the task. It isn’t easy, though the quilts in this week’s Throwback Thursday, like Kelly Stockwell’s quilt of her husband, Bob (above), might make it seem easy.

I have taught a lot of classes where people have chosen to make portraits. And I have often wished I could give them more guidance than I am able to with my limited time in class. However, because of a series of Zoom fabric collage slideshow and demos that Tom and I put together in 2020, I’ve since had the videos of those sessions available as reference for my students. The presentations cover all the features of a face: nose, eyes, mouth, neck and hair, plus four other portraiture related topics.

Now for the first time, I’m combining all eight hour-long videos into one collection. The Facial Features eWorkshop will be available starting this Saturday, June 3. Look for the announcement in Saturday’s regularly scheduled blog post.

If you are interested in better understanding and creating portraits in fabric, the Facial Features eWorkshop (a great companion resource to the Fabric Collage Online Master Class) can take you beyond the basics to the next level of challenge: Portraiture.
