For the next few weeks Throwback Thursday will feature Quilt Story posts. In these posts I tell the tale of how certain of my quilts came into being. I like my quilts to have a story to them, something to engage my imagination beyond the image I am working from. Often I do research about my subject, but other times I simply develop a close feeling with the creature I am making. In any case, the story informs the decisions I make in the creature itself and in the background I decide on.
Based on a wood block print by Albrecht Dürer, my quilt “Tickled Pink” represents a breakthrough in how I treat color. I’m often asked why pink? This week’s TBT post explains how the idea was generated by spotting some fabulous fabric. It goes to show that inspiration can come in many ways.
“Tickled Pink,” or “Albie” as I call him, has been on display in London as part of an exhibit of quilts using Kaffe Fassett fabrics. The exhibit, The Power of Pattern, is now traveling to Edinburgh, Scotland. Two of my students, who met in an online class, will be visiting with Albie and the rest of the show. One lives in Edinburgh (walking distance from the venue) and the other happens to be visiting Scotland during the exhibit dates. I hope they send me pics of their outing! (hint hint)

What wonderful memories this piece invoked as it was Tickled Pink that got me to “sit up and notice” a different way to express oneself using textiles. I will always remember that first trip to Harpswell and all the encouragement I received.
