Over the past week, as I prepared for tonight’s Fly on the Wall: Susan Carlson Studio Watch, one of my tasks has been to collect a selection of fabrics for this new project. This Saturday, in your regular post, I’ll talk a bit about how I chose the fabrics for Sunshine Oma, the fanciful fabric collage portrait I will be creating during the next four weeks. While I had my mom in mind when choosing these fabrics, it occurs to me that a good selection of colors and values can be used for almost any subject at all.

There’s still time to register for this Fly on the Wall series (see details below). In the meantime, today’s TBT covers some general guidelines for choosing fabric for fabric collage. From color to pattern to material, this post can help you make the right choices for purchasing and using fabric for fabric collage.

Please also note that registration for my Animals Only live online class on March 27-31, 2023, will open up for registration this Saturday: see here for more information.

Watch—and work along with me—as I create a collage portrait of my lovely mama (a.k.a. Oma) as a radiant sun face—to have ready for her 90th birthday at the end of January.

Each session is recorded so don’t worry if you miss something during the presentation or even miss the entire evening. You’ll be able to catch up with the recording.

For those who wish to try their hand at a sunface portrait, in addition to the slideshow, demo, Q&A, and full recordings of the four presentations, registrants will also receive all of the following:

• A free PDF of my Sun Portrait pattern.

• Free access to the Thursday Night in My Studio Live! recorded presentation (see preview below) that explains how to adapt my Sun Face pattern to a photo of a particular person.

• And a $20 discount for a one-on-one coaching session scheduled for January or February 2023—in case you’re interested in specialized help with your own work-along creation.
