Fabric collage is flexible enough to handle just about any subject. In my teaching, I’ve seen it all: people, animals, landscapes, imaginary creatures, even still lifes.
Each subject has its advantages and challenges, however—especially for the beginner. Thus when prospective students are asking me to help them narrow their choices down, I give them guidance based on their level of experience rather than a blanket judgment.
In a class I held in Portland, Maine in 2018, as they neared the end of the week I asked my students to reflect on their choice of subject. Had they made a good choice? Did they regret their choice? Why was their subject a good one for them?
This week’s Throwback Thursday talks about choosing a subject for fabric collage, but it intersperses these brief interviews, such as the one with Linda Anderson (below). Her in-progress hippo also appears above. Let their experience help guide you to the subject that will be successful for you.
