A while ago, I thought it would be helpful to talk about how to depict fur in fabric collage, since furry pets and other critters are such popular subjects for fabric collage (see our pup Kali of “Golden Temple of the Good Girls” fame above). Thus this week’s Throwback Thursday.

It also seemed appropriate to revisit this particular subject in preparation for this Saturday’s regular post—the first of three posts featuring the work of four of my students from my recent September 2021 Live Online Class. This first group of students named themselves the Leaping Lemurs, after one of their chosen subjects—the rest went the canine route—all subjects were furry and many of the strategies I talk about in this TBT post were employed. Strategies need to vary because types of fur varies. Some fur is long and bushy, other fur is short and smooth, and some animals have a combination of different types of fur. Having a toolbox of tips to refer to will help achieve the desired fluffiness, or silkiness, of your furry friend.
