Empty Spools at Asilomar State Park in California is one of the premier quilting conferences in the world. For the past two years, 2020 and now 2021, their series of seminars (except for Session 1 last year) have been cancelled—as far as I know, for the first time in their multi-decade history. I was four days from boarding a plane in March 2020, when the state parks in California were closed due to COVID 19 and thus the conference was cancelled. But next year, in March 2022, I plan to return to Asilomar.
As a few things begin to “return to normal,” I’m thinking how my future in-person classes will look and compare to the past. I’ve learned a few good teaching skills in this last year of going online, and I think I can use a few of them to enhance in-person learning as well. We’ll see how it all comes together.
But in the meantime, here’s a throwback to where I was 2 years ago—teaching at Asilomar, in May 2019. I wrote a blog post for each of the two weeks I taught there, thus the “Two-Fer.” Enjoy the wonderful fabric collages created by my talented students as well as the beautiful surroundings of this unique setting.

I have been patiently waiting for a couple of years (Covid delay) now to be able to go to Asilomar. In the mean time I have done my own Pretend Empty Spools Seminars at home by myself using the Spiral eWorkshop. I blogged that week on frommysewingroom.wordpress.com. I have also continued with Susan’s BetaDuo pattern, and a turtle of my own. I’m looking forward to meeting Susan and learning from her in person.
