This week we continue our series of Throwback Thursday posts that outline the technique of fabric collage. Last week, we started at the beginning with “From Photo to Fabric: Choose the Best Shot”, which provided a list of criteria for choosing a good image for fabric collage.
This week, we look at how to turn your photo into a line drawing which you can then enlarge and transfer to your foundation fabric. This post has been updated with a video example of tracing my dog, Felix. My previous dog, Pippin, was the model (above) for my quilt “Dixie Dingo Dreaming.” Just to be clear, you don’t need a handsome dog to create a great pattern (but it doesn’t hurt).
We’ll continue this 12-part series through the rest of January and through February and March, with each TBT post moving us a step further on the fabric collage road.
You may be asking yourself, “Self, I wonder why Susan is doing this?”
Well, read this Saturday’s post to find out. (Hint: It has to do with a new series of Thursday Night in My Studio Live! presentations.)

Susan can I buy a copy of your pattern of the dog. I think you called it Dixie dog dreaming or could be Felix. My daughter has an Australian cattle dog”Mac” that we all love . I’m a quilt. Maker and promised her to do a fabric collage of him. I seem to be getting no where building a pattern of my own. So would very much like being able to buy your pattern. I also follow your emails on collage. Donna McCormack
Donna, I’m sorry, but I don’t make patterns or encourage copying of my major quilts. If you need more guidance in creating a pattern, I assume you have read the blog post I wrote on it: https://susancarlson.com/2017/02/18/making-a-pattern-for-fabric-collage-update/. There’s also the Fabric Collage Master Class which includes instructions on creating a patter (and of course the entire process).
