The pandemic has opened up a new realm of learning with online teaching—and I’m discovering it has its benefits. In the Throwback Thursday post below, I introduced readers to my first Fabric Collage Coaching students. Four months later I have twenty-nine fabric collage coaching sessions under my belt, and lots of experience using the computer mouse to annotate photos of student work, such as Dawn Erikson’s moose collage above.

I’m really enjoying how this online experience replicates my favorite part of an in-person class: one-on-one, me giving advice, pointers, and encouragement. I also appreciate having a solid chunk of time to give to each student. In class, my one-on-one feedback is broken up into ten-minute blocks. The online coaching format gives me the luxury of covering all the questions asked and addressing any additional issues that I notice. There’s no need for my student to hurry either, as each online session is recorded for review as often as needed.

This Saturday, in your regular weekly post, you’ll be able to follow along with student Joanne Schwartz as I coach her from the beginning to the completion of a portrait of her friend’s dog, Catch. Using photos and the annotated video of our sessions, you’ll see where she began with a photo and tracing, how I could help her choose her fabrics, then how we moved together through the stages (or drafts) to a finished quilt. I think you’ll find it interesting.

I’m thankful I can offer this online alternative to in-person teaching. Someday in-person classes will return, but now that I’m getting the hang of it, Fabric Collage Coaching is here to stay—from home to home—no matter where my students may live.

  • Hello Susan,
I attended your Maine workshop a few years ago. I saw Oma’s store on Etsy and ordered 2 of her pumpkins. They just arrived and they’re gorgeous! Please tell her how much I love them. I might have to get another one!
