In this fourth and final post in a series of Throwback Thursdays featuring my Summer Quilt Retreats held here in Maine, we look back just one year to June 2019. What seemed so commonplace—students traveling from all over the country to gather and work together in a relatively enclosed space—now seems implausible.
I miss my students a lot, especially those like Vickie Ostrow, who I have seen in multiple classes. Vickie is a fellow Mainer, and was able to sometimes step in to fill last-minute cancellations. That’s a close-up of her lizard above. You can see more of Vickie and her lizard in this blog post from later in 2019.
Lest you get you the idea that I have only done four total Maine retreats, here’s a link to a post highlighting 12 of my Maine retreats, held since beginning my blog in late 2015. Some of these retreats were held in Portland, Maine, but the majority, like the one featured in this TBT, were held just down the road at the Harpswell Inn, a classic New England-style inn.
The June 2019 post below, is a favorite of mine because Tom shot videos of the participants. He asked them to share their “lightbulb” moments, the moment they understood some aspect of fabric collage, such as gluing, cutting or blending fabrics. I love hearing how the experience of being at the retreat led them to a fabric collage epiphany!

Serendipity Quilts for Sale
My book on fabric collage, Serendipity Quilts, is back in stock! The price is $29.95 plus shipping. For a signed copy click the button below. Note: If you want a inscribed copy (as in “To Jane”) I have to be home to do it, so you may want to check my teaching schedule. Otherwise your order may be delayed.
What a lovely setting and creative environment! I desperately want to take a class with Susan. As with so many teachers, the classes are filled with former students who have first chance at sign-up. Please, please, Susan, spread your knowledge around! I don’t understand why some classes can’t be designated for new students only. Okay, I’ll stop whining now and go back to the blogs.
When we can travel again, don’t hesitate to get on a wait list for a last-minute opening. This is how I got to attend in Portland in 2017–a treat of a lifetime!
I have been on waiting lists for 2 years. I currently am #34 in Montana!
Dear Susan,
I love your work, but most of all, I want to lear to do a collage. Will you be hosting a class in Maine in 2023, and will you include new students? I would like to kow.
Please take care.
Aida
Hello Aida! Thanks for your comments and interest! I’m only planning online learning opportunities for 2023. Just last Saturday we posted my plans for the first half of 2023, with a couple new online classes included. Dates for later in 2023 will be added later in the new year. Thanks again, Susan
