Sometimes students ask me “What art class or instruction can I take to improve my fabric collage quilts?”

My answer is for them to take a beginner drawing or painting class. Drawing and painting both teach the artist how to see form by paying attention to value, the darks and lights in an image.

In this week’s Throwback Thursday, I use my quilt “Peace, Love, Tie-Dye, Save the Whales” to demonstrate how paying attention to value allows me to use non-realistic colors while creating a recognizable image.

In your regular Saturday post, I’ll revisit and update my quilt “Elements” which also uses non-realistic colors in the creation of fabric collage portraits.
