Here’s looking at you, kid. On this Valentine’s Day, let’s take a look at that window to the soul, the human eye. Nothing gives your fabric collage portrait more life than getting the eyes right. But creating the tiny details in eyes can be a challenge unless you have your technique figured out. The blog post below describes how I make eyes. The same technique can be applied to other features as well, such the mouth, nose, and ears.

And it isn’t limited to people, of course. In my quilt “Polka Dodo,” I used the same technique, which I sometimes refer to as “top down, bottom up” for how you start with the part of the image that’s “closest” to you. His eye (only one shows) gives him a haughty, full-of-himself personality. In this Saturday’s regular post, I’ll welcome home “Polka Dodo” after four years touring with the SAQA (Studio Art Quilts Associates) show “Wild Fabrications.” In that post I’ll update “Polka Dodo’s” Quilt Story with a video talking more in depth about the fabrics I used to make the piece.
