Today’s selection of in-progress portrait collages from my live online class students are actually all double portraits—based on either a son or daughter with granddaughters, or an old-time sepia “dress-up” photo celebrating a 25th wedding anniversary, 45 years ago. Amazing memories now being captured in full-color fabric collage.

This second online class of the year focused on intermediate and advanced students who were interested in delving into fabric collage portraiture—either to continue their learning or as a first-time subject—such as Sara Crocker’s challenging tooth-filled portrait of her daughter, Devon, detail above.

If you are inspired by these or other fabric collage quilts you see in my posts, there is still room in our five-day class this fall. Learn fabric collage live from the comfort and convenience of your own home space (as today’s students did). See the information below.

My June 2024 Live Online Class: left to right; top row—Joanna White, me, Jackie Dalley; middle row—Sara Crocker, LeahGrace Kayler, Grace Crocker (no known relation to Sara); and last but not least, Dale Goldberg

I’m proud to say they all did spectacularly, as you’ll see in both this post and last week’s Saturday post—three students and their work in each. Each person has sent us a nice write-up about their chosen subject, which we have included along with in-progress photos below.

At the end of each student’s section of their classroom collage project, you’ll find a gallery of previous work they shared for our after-class “happy hour” one evening that week. It was enjoyable to get to know these ladies a little better as they talked about their quilts.

Please click on those images to see the pieces larger and to scroll through each photo gallery.

Dale Goldberg

From Dale:

The name of my quilt is Adoration. It is based on a photograph of our son Jonathan holding his newborn, first baby/first grandchild, Juliet. This photo was taken in the hospital room where Juliet was born, about 2 hours after she was born. Four granddaughters later (I have a total of 5 granddaughters), this photograph still holds a special place in my heart, as it marks the beginning of his journey as a father, and ours as grandparents.

Grace Crocker

From Grace:

My quilt was “My 25th Anniversary Memory.” It was 1979, my husband, Bill, and I took a trip to Silver City Nevada, to celebrate. While there we posed for a vintage photo. It was in sepia tones so I could make the colors anything I chose.  I had fun working with the lacy fabrics and giving a three dimensional flavor to the quilt. Just anxious to proceed with the dapper gentleman.

Sara Crocker

From Sara:

I was planning on doing a portrait quilt of each of my 3 grandkids, Anu (20), Nico (17), and Rahul (16). I started with Anu, but she didn’t like the photo I was going to originally work with, and she asked for a quilt based on a photo of her and her mom (my daughter Devon). They are an extremely close pair and love to tease each other, so I thought this photo captured their personalities a bit. I had not done a portrait of a person in Susan’s technique yet, so wanted to use this opportunity to learn how to collage facial features based on a photo. Devon’s big smile was a challenge — 21 individual teeth!! My daughter Devon on the left and granddaughter Anu on right.

  • I learned a lot in this class. Despite a difficult first day (for me) where I felt stuck and on the verge of tears for most of the day, Susan and my classmates were very helpful in moving my work forward. It was a very “safe” atmosphere as any suggestions offered were coming from a helpful vs critical place. Everyone brought their own special talents and perspectives to contribute. Susan is a fabulous teacher!

  • These portraits are amazing and absolutely beautiful. The personalities shine through … whether or not the collage is finished..Bravo to all!
