This week in October of 2023, summer has decided to make a temporary return to Maine. Temps went above eighty degrees (Fahrenheit), and my longtime BFCFF (best fabric collage friend forever) Darlene Determan, invited me and my sister Heidi, to visit her and her husband Len, at their sea-side home a little over an hour south of us. We stayed for a two day mini-retreat. The crashing surf was soothing and walking barefoot on the long beach was a treat. Good friends and good food and constant catching up. Thank you again, Darlene and Len.

Darlene must have attended ten or more (we lost count) of my classes, but more importantly we grew to be close friends even when not wielding the glue and scissors. She has a great sense of humor, plus a fanciful sense of color that makes it a pleasure to work with her on her quilts—such as one of her rainbow-inspired pup collage above.

Today’s Throwback Thursday features many of Darlene’s quilts. It’s part of a series of three posts featuring the fabric collages of three long-time students and friends: Darlene Determan, Joanne Hannon Shaw, and Marilyn Davidson.
