This Saturday when your weekly blog post arrives, prepare for another Finish Line post featuring the completed work of my fabric collage students. A theme that came up in the comments from this week’s featured fabric artists is the importance of choosing a good photo as your subject.

Today’s Throwback Thursday describes how I judge whether a photo would make a good subject or not. Choosing a photo that is memorable is easy. Choosing one with good contrast, plenty of detail, in focus, and with plenty of light and dark value is harder. But it’s worth the effort to find a good photo as reference as it will make the creation of your fabric collage easier.

Sometimes, however, a good photo of your subject doesn’t exist and it isn’t possible to get one. So while this post encourages you to choose the best shot you can, it also provides tips with dealing with the reality of an “imperfect” photo that nonetheless is a perfect choice for you.
