For the next few weeks Throwback Thursday will feature Quilt Story posts. In these posts I tell the tale of how certain of my quilts came into being. I like my quilts to have a story to them, something to engage my imagination beyond the image I am working from. Often I do research about my subject, but other times I simply develop a close feeling with the creature I am making. In any case, the story informs the decisions I make in the creature itself and in the background I decide on.
In the case of “Polka Dodo” you’ll see that he started out on a list I made after creating my first large animal quilt, “Tickled Pink.” I literally sat down and made a list of animals that interested me. And amongst others, the dodo bird was one that appealed to me. But he remained on the list until I was sorting through my fabric one day. Little did I know the idea that would get me started on this haughty fellow. Read the whole story in today’s TBT from February 2019.
