This week’s Saturday post will be all about our favorite local star: ol’ Sol herself, the Sun. However, in today’s TBT we’ll take a look at another major celestial object, the moon—a crescent moon in fact—with the profile features of my son, Sam.

This lunar Throwback is to the first post documenting the newest fabric collage quilt of Sam, “Earthshine,” finally finished a year ago, but begun in the early weeks of the pandemic. Those days of staying home and staying creative generated new ideas, and this fabric collage portrait was one of them.

Personalizing a crescent moon with Sam’s features led to later 2020 video presentations of how to personalize my sun and moon portrait patterns, which eventually led to this year’s fabric collage portrait with the facial features of my mom, Meta—the subject of January’s “Fly on the Wall” series, “Sunshine Oma.”

This Saturday we’ll continue the celestial theme with images of “Sunshine Oma.” While I was live via Zoom creating a portrait of my mom to fit into the center of my Sun Face Pattern, viewers were invited to create their own solar versions, inserting the faces of their familiar folks into a sun pattern. In that post, you’ll see a sampling of in-progress student work along with my own in-progress portrait collage.

But for today, please enjoy a visit to the beginnings of a moon portrait.
