Next week I begin my next series of Thursday Night in My Studio Live! presentations. For the next four Thursday nights I’ll be talking about working in drafts in a series I’m calling “Is It Drafty in Here? Fabric Collage Drafts”. Completing a fabric collage quilt isn’t a marathon. You don’t create a quilt all at once. Instead, it’s a series of sprints or, if you prefer short hikes that you string together to reach your destination.
I call each leg of the journey a draft, so on Thursday nights I’ll be talking about fabric collage drafts, giving examples, showing techniques that apply at each stage, and taking questions. Over the four weeks, we’ll cover the entire process of fabric collage, from design to piecing to background to finishing.

“Is It Drafty in Here?
Fabric Collage in Drafts”
This week’s Throwback Thursday reminded me that there’s another stage many quilts pass through, one I call the “messy-scary” stage. This is the point at which you’ve made a bit of progress but the quilt doesn’t really hang together yet. You look at the piece and wonder just what the heck you were thinking. When in class, I warn my students about this stage, they chuckle, but I don’t think they believe me until about the end of day two when they look a little shell-shocked. I give them a little gentle encouragement and remind them I warned them it would happen. They feel a little relieved and usually by the middle of the next day of class, they have pushed through the first wave of the Messy-Scary Stage.

I am grateful for all the work you, Tom and Sam are doing. I enjoyed the sessions last night. I try to watch as much of you videos I can. I am a quilter. I have tried another method of collage. Now, I am reading your book and I want to make the sun and the moon. I am very excited about your method.
I am also grateful for the covid which give me the opportunity to see these videos from my home. I probably would not be able to attend your sessions in person.
Thank you so much
