Tonight in our Thursday Night in My Studio Live! presentation, I’ll be presenting “Crocodylus Smylus,” my 20-foot saltwater crocodile quilt. So for today’s Throwback Thursday post, it seemed like a good time to revisit my first trip to Australia, where “Salties” are native. Stevie the saltwater croc also took the trip to Melbourne, Australia, and joined me at the Australasian Quilt Convention (AQC), in April 2016.

As you’ll see in the post below, she was a huge hit, with lots of “photo ops” happening in front of her. Check out the silly video of my students doing crocodile chomps as they parade past—what a great bunch of ladies.

Last year in April 2019, I was again in Australia for AQC, this time with my husband Tom. I learned that this year’s convention has been postponed until August due to the coronavirus pandemic. What a different world in just a year. Enjoy the flashback to better times below.

On the Road: Melbourne, Australia

Tonight’s presentation is sold out, but you’ll be able to view an on-demand recording of the session, available this Saturday for $5. Links for the on-demand video will be in my blog post and also found on the front page of my website: www.susancarlson.com.

After tonight, we’ll be taking a two-week break from the Thursday Night in My Studio Live! presentations. But we’ll be back—the next presentation is scheduled for May 7th at 7pm Eastern time. I had such fun doing my “improv fish” with fabric scraps last week, that I decided to do the same with portraits as some “let loose” playtime. So the theme on May 7 will be “Improvisational Faces.”

For an up-to-date listing of current and past presentations, visit the front page of this website and scroll down to the Thursday Night in My Studio Live! section.

  • Susan, Thank you so much for the opportunity of a free pattern. I’ve been following your work for awhile but intimidated to start anything; but now I’m very enthused to start work on this gecko! Thank you again for your generosity!
