Fabric collage is a creative method of working. The “rules” are few and flexible.
In this week’s Throwback Thursday I feature the Quilt Story for my piece “Samuelsaurus Rex,” which upended how I worked in a pretty major way.
Instead of poring through my stash of folded yardage, for this portrait of my young son Sam I used scraps collected over the years of creating quilts. Maybe you have a cardboard box of scraps you couldn’t part with but didn’t know what to do with.
I don’t only work with scraps, however. For a much later portrait of Sam (at about the same age) and his cousin Maia, I created my palette by cutting bits from my yardage. This quilt, “Kissin’ Cousins,” will be given its own Quilt Story this Saturday in your regular weekly post.
Fabric Collage Master Class
For instructions on the entire fabric collage process, you can purchase the Susan Carlson Fabric Collage Online Master Class Manual. Using video, photos, and text I take you from soup to nuts, beginning to end in creating your own fabric collage masterpiece.
Fabulous tip.
I always LOVE to read your posts and look forward to them. I have some of your books and have watched all your you tube movies. I have started a collage quilt but have yet to finish. I’m wondering if anyone has ever used the adult coloring books that you see everywhere as a starting point for a pattern. I was at the store today looking at one and thought how well the patterns would lend themselves to collage quilts. Of course copy rights might be an issue. Just an idea. Thx for your weekly inspiration.
