Thanks to the judges at the AQS Des Moines show for selecting this piece as the Best Wall Quilt in 2012. “Peace, Love, Tie-Dye, Save the Whales” is an homage to both the Beatles and Warhol. My son Sam poses as John Lennon in a treatment a la the pop iconography master. The title refers to a goodbye we share, often silently using our own private sign language.
Each portrait uses fabrics that reflect the theme of that quadrant. Peace (top left) uses peace signs and even the word itself among the peaceful greens. Love (top right) uses hearts and a variety of reds. Tie-Dye uses tie-dyed fabric. Save the Whales employs sea mammals in blue.
I’m so impressed w/ your creativity and use of values. Just now retired and always looking for new outlets for my creative side and have just discovered you! I used to sew, made all my own clothes etc but am not diligent enough to work within the constraints of traditional sewn quilts. This collage quilt idea (new to me) is a great way to use fabrics in a not so structured way.
As I’m new to this fabric collage quilt idea I did find Laura Heine via google as a “collage guru”. As I’ve looked into her techniques of how to create a quilt I immediately thought there had to be a better, less expensive and tedious way of construction. Ergo, You!! I’ve watched many of your You Tube videos and going to use your gluing techniques for construction, as I do want to quilt my finished designs with various sewn patterns.
Thanks for sharing! Are you going to be in the southeast for any shows or classes in 2019?
